How retrieval works (in plain language)
Two methods, fused:
BM25 (lexical)
Find chunks that contain your query words, weighted by rarity. Fast, deterministic, great for names and exact terms.
On-device embeddings (semantic)
Convert chunks and queries into vectors that capture meaning. Find by similarity, not just word match. Runs entirely on your Mac via Apple's NLEmbedding.
We fuse both with Reciprocal Rank Fusion and a gentle recency boost. Same query, same data, same order — every time.
