Otter.ai and Fireflies.ai dominate the meeting recorder market. Millions of users, strong feature sets, heavy marketing. But there is one question that rarely gets a straight answer: are they actually GDPR compliant? And a second one Mac users keep asking: do they actually feel like Mac apps?

The honest answer to the first is: it depends on how much compliance work you are willing to do yourself. The answer to the second is: not really. The GDPR compliance problem

Before comparing tools, it helps to be clear on what "GDPR compliant" actually requires when you record meetings.

What GDPR requires for meeting recording

1. Lawful basis. You need a valid reason to process personal data, and voices are personal data.
2. Transparency and consent. Participants must be informed, and in some countries (Belgium, for instance, under Article 314bis of the Criminal Code) all participants must consent.
3. Data minimisation. Only collect what is necessary, and keep it only as long as needed.

Privacy: where the difference is clearest

MeetMemo transcribes audio on your Mac using NVIDIA Parakeet running on the Apple Neural Engine. The transcript is then summarised on-device with Apple MLX (Qwen 3 4B by default). Neither the audio nor the transcript ever leaves your machine. There is no account, so there is nothing to breach on our side, and because you are the only party processing the data there is no processor, no DPA and no cross-border transfer to document. Legally it is the equivalent of taking your own notes.

Otter.ai and Fireflies.ai both record via a bot that joins your call and transcribe in the cloud. Your audio passes through their servers, is processed by their models and is stored on their infrastructure, in the US. Both publish security documentation and will sign a DPA, both have enterprise tiers with admin controls, and both have strengthened their privacy policies over the years. But the fundamental architecture has not changed: the audio leaves your device. Check each vendor's current policy on whether customer data may be used to improve their models.

If you discuss client data, HR matters, anything under professional secrecy, or simply work under GDPR constraints, the local-first approach simplifies compliance from a project to a non-issue.

Mac integration: native versus wrapper

MeetMemo is built specifically for macOS: a native Swift app that lives in the menu bar, captures system audio directly (no bot, no extension), respects macOS design patterns and integrates with Apple Notes. Your meeting notes appear in your existing Notes library in a MeetMemo folder, organised by date and title, with no extra steps. Language support for Belgium and Europe

For Belgian and European users, language accuracy varies enormously between these three.

MeetMemo explicitly supports Dutch, English and French, with specific attention to Flemish dialect and code-switching, the habit of dropping into English for technical terms mid-sentence that is normal in any Belgian meeting. In our test meetings Parakeet reached 95%+ on Dutch, about 93% on French and about 97% on clean English.

Otter supports many languages but is tuned for English first. English is excellent; Dutch was rough in our tests, roughly 60 to 70%, with names, compound words and technical terms frequently misfiring. That is borderline unusable for business notes.

Fireflies advertises 60+ languages and was better than Otter on Dutch and French in our tests, though still inconsistent, with formatting that often needed cleanup.

If your meetings are English-only, the language gap does not matter. If they are not, it is probably the deciding factor.
